After four sprint finishes in the 2026 Giro d’Italia, the fifth stage offers a completely different challenge. Wednesday’s route features a medium-mountain profile ideal for breakaways, bringing an end to the expected bunch sprints that have dominated the early days.
The 203-kilometer stage runs from the coastal town of Praia a Mare to Potenza. The key point is the second-category climb to Monte Grande di Viggiano, which presents tough numbers: 6.6 kilometers at an average gradient of 9.1%. However, since this ascent is followed by nearly 50 kilometers of racing, it effectively rules out any serious action from the overall contenders.
Once the climb is completed, if the peloton allows, escapees will have a golden opportunity to fight for victory on broken terrain that offers no respite until the finish line. Controlling a breakaway will be challenging for sprinters’ teams, especially given that the finish line is uphill, meaning many fast men could be dropped on the climb.
This stage promises a different dynamic after the mass sprints, with the potential for a thrilling victory from a breakaway group.
