Daniel Rios converted a penalty kick in the 94th minute, leading CF Montreal to a dramatic 2-0 victory over visiting Orlando City FC on Saturday. Montreal (4-7-0, 12 points) secured their third win in four matches (2-1-0) after patiently creating numerous opportunities before finally breaking through in stoppage time.
Rios netted his first MLS goal for Montreal after Orlando’s Robin Jansson was penalized for tripping Luca Petrasso. On the resulting spot kick, Rios curled a right-footed shot into the upper right corner, beating goalkeeper Maxime Crepeau, who dove the wrong way. The clutch goal came just days after Rios scored in Montreal’s 5-0 Canadian Championship first-round win over Calgary Blizzard SC on Wednesday.
After Rios opened the scoring, Dagur Thorhallsson added another in the eighth minute of stoppage time, slotting a right-footed shot from the center of the box into the upper right corner. These late strikes were part of 25 total shot attempts for Montreal, with 11 blocked and six on target.
Goalkeeper Thomas Gillier made four saves and received strong support from his defense. In the 88th minute, Dawid Bugaj blocked a shot from Duncan McGuire, preserving the clean sheet just before the decisive penalty.
Orlando (3-8-1, 10 points) failed to extend their winning streak to three after a remarkable comeback against Inter Miami the previous week. The Lions have not won in Montreal since Decision Day in the 2021 season. Crepeau, a Quebec native, made three saves, while his teammates registered nine shot attempts. He kept the match scoreless by denying Petrasso’s header from a corner kick in the 58th minute.
Before the dramatic finish, Montreal missed the net four times in the first half and saw Wikelman Carmona denied in the opening minute. In the 18th minute, Ivan Jaime also missed after a one-on-one move inside the box. Early in the second half, Petrasso hooked a shot wide left, and Victor Loturi missed the target in the 59th minute before misfiring on a header eight minutes later.
