Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has heaped praise on defender Nathan Ake, calling him “one of the best players I have ever coached.” The Dutch international, now 31, is entering his sixth season at the Etihad, having made 175 appearances and lifted 11 trophies with the club.
Ake returned to the starting lineup in the Carabao Cup final victory over Southampton and delivered another strong performance in the weekend league win against Brentford. Guardiola highlighted the defender’s professionalism and reliability, stating: “When it comes to focus, Nathan is among the best. There are very few players more reliable than him.”
The City boss acknowledged Ake’s physical limitations, saying: “If you ask him to play several days in a row, he struggles. But in the Carabao Cup final and against Brentford, his performances were complete. Wow, he is one of the best players I have coached.” Guardiola also recalled Ake’s arrival from Bournemouth as “an incredible deal” and noted that the Dutchman featured in the Champions League final in Istanbul, underscoring his dependability.
Regarding Ake entering the final year of his contract, Guardiola said: “He has one year left, right? I want him to stay, but I do not know what will happen.” City are set to host Crystal Palace on the evening of May 13 in a crucial Premier League fixture; a win would cut Arsenal’s lead at the top to just two points. When asked about pundits dismissing City’s title chances after Arsenal’s victory over West Ham, Guardiola responded: “We play tomorrow first, then go to Bournemouth and return home to face Aston Villa. The important thing is tomorrow. Lose focus and you’re in danger. I always believe we can do better.”
The 31-year-old has proven to be a valuable squad player for Guardiola, capable of stepping in at left-back or centre-half when needed. His ability to remain concentrated and deliver consistent performances has earned him glowing praise from one of football’s most demanding managers.
