If there was ever a match to convince Arsenal fans—and even neutrals—that the club’s agonizing 22-year wait for a league title is finally over, this was it. It was a disjointed, scrappy performance where injuries and tactical errors allowed the underdogs to gain the upper hand. Then, with just seven minutes remaining, a player who hadn’t scored in 26 games struck a deflected finish to rescue the team.
As if that wasn’t enough drama, more unbelievable tension followed. Callum Wilson’s would-be equalizer in the 95th minute was controversially disallowed after a nearly four-minute VAR review, which must have felt like an eternity for the away fans at the London Stadium.
The victory—and the way it was achieved—means even the most pessimistic Arsenal supporter can now start to believe that this really is their year. With only two matches left, both against sides in the bottom six, the title is within reach.

The late drama of Sunday’s clash was season-defining for Arsenal. This could be their “Aguerooo” moment, their Robin van Persie volley, their Vincent Kompany screamer. And it was fitting that the two moments that might win the title for this team were far from beautiful.
Mikel Arteta’s side has been criticized all season for grinding out victories through set-pieces and any means necessary. So it was appropriate that a deflected strike and a controversial officiating decision—centered on a corner-kick tussle—secured a seismic three points at West Ham’s expense.
Leandro Trossard, who hadn’t scored in 26 games, popped up to sweep home Martin Ødegaard’s pass via a big deflection off Tomáš Souček in the 83rd minute, restoring Arsenal’s five-point lead over Manchester City at the death. But that moment of huge drama would be surpassed by a VAR review for the ages.
In the fifth minute of stoppage time, the ball fell to Wilson from a corner, and he blasted it home despite Declan Rice’s best efforts on the goal line. Yet West Ham was denied their euphoric moment as VAR recommended a review, and referee Chris Kavanagh chalked the goal off after an excruciating check of the pitchside monitor. Striker Pablo was judged to have fouled goalkeeper David Raya by holding his arm while the ball was in the air.
When we look back on the 2025–26 title race, this could very well be the moment that defines it.

Arteta could scarcely believe what he had witnessed when he faced the media afterward. “What a moment, what an afternoon, what a week it’s been for us, so full of emotions,” he said. “I cannot praise enough the attitude, the desire, the courage, and the quality of the team shown throughout this week, because there was so much at stake. Today we knew against a team fighting for their lives, against a club with incredible history, how tough it was going to be.”
He added: “A call from the refs that I think is very brave, but very consistent with what they’ve been talking about all season. When I have to be critical, I have been, and today I have to praise them—at least for giving the option to a referee to decide, away from the lights and the chaos.”
